Adopting a New Puppy
Dog owners are encouraged call on agents who represent these companies for renting and home owner insurance policies. The companies listed below do not discriminate by breed.
NEWS: Farmers Insurance has announced that it is no longer writing new policies in California for dogs identified as pit bulls, rottweilers or wolf hybrids. Farmer’s clients in CA should check with their agents to learn when their policy is up for renewal and begin looking for a stand alone dog policy or – preferably – a new, non-discriminatory provider such as State Farm.
State Farm Insurance (highly recommended)
United Services Automobile Association (USAA) for veterans and families of veterans
When your puppy is spayed/neutered they will also get a microchip (paid for by Oh My Dog Rescue). It is important to register your puppy’s microchip online as soon as possible. There may be a one time fee to register your puppy’s microchip, follow the instructions that come with your microchip. You should register your pet at FETCH.ID.
Here is a list of supplies you might need for your puppy:
- Large crate
- Piddle pads
(paper pads are available at Costco or you can buy washable whelping pads on Amazon)
- Puppy-safe toys
- Food and water bowls
- Puppy food
(they are currently eating EUKANUBA Puppy Growth Puppy Food, but I also recommend
Nature’s Domain All Ages Food sold at Costco – red bag)
- Stuffed toy that warms up for puppy to snuggle at night
Your puppy will receive one or more DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo and Parainfluenza) vaccination before you take them home. They will be due for additional DHPP vaccinations every 3 weeks after that until they reach 16 weeks of age. The DHPP final vaccine should be given at or after 16 weeks of age for ideal protection. Your puppy will also be due for their rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age. There are other optional vaccines you can give your puppy such as Bortedella and Leptospirosis. The Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccine is recommended for dogs that frequently socialize with groups of other dogs. This includes dogs that go to obedience classes, dog shows, dog parks, doggy day-care, grooming facilities, and boarding facilities. The Leptospirosis vaccine is recommended for dogs that go on hikes or camping and may drink water from streams or lakes. Please discuss these vaccination options with your vet. You will receive a schedule of recommended vaccinations in your puppy’s adoption folder. Your puppy will not be able to leave your home or backyard until a week after their final vaccinations
